An Analysis of the Nature of Tessera Materials on Venus

چکیده
Introduction: One of the major and outstanding problem in Venus geology is: Does Venus possess a non-basaltic crustal component which may be an analog to the continental crust of Earth [e.g. 1]? Detailed photogeologic analysis of plains units that make up the majority of the surface of Venus strongly suggests that the plains were formed by eruptions of low-viscosity lavas [2-4]. Such a morphology is interpreted to be an indicator of the basaltic composition of the plains and

Geological Mapping of the Fortuna Tessera Quadrangle
Introduction: The Fortuna Tessera quadrangle (V–2, Fig. 1) is in the northern hemisphere of Venus and extends from 50° to 75° N. and from 0° to 60° E. In a regional context, this territory represents a large region of tessera terrain [1] that includes the major portion of Fortuna Tessera in the northern half of the map area and Laima Tessera in the SE corner of the quadrangle. The tessera regio...

Introduction: A fundamental objective of future exploration of Venus is to understand the degree to which crustal composition varies across the planet. The results from the Venera missions indicate that the plains are generally basaltic in composition [1,2]. From a morphologic standpoint, the presence of high standing (kilometers above the surrounding plains) continent-sized uplands of tessera ...

متن کاملStructural and Kinematic Analysis of Eastern Ovda Regio,Venus: Implications for Crustal Plateau Formation
Crustal plateaus on Venus constitute one of that planet’s most intriguing tectonic features. They host so-called “tessera” terrain, or deformed crust exhibiting two or more sets of intersecting tectonic lineaments, which comprises ∼8% of Venus’ surface. Major questions surrounding crustal plateaus and tessera terrain include: (1) What is the nature of crustal plateau deformation? What structure...
متن کاملImplications of Venus Evolution Based on Ribbon Tessera Terrain Relations within Five Large Regional
Introduction. Venus' ribbon tessera terrain [1,2] (rtt) records ancient environmental conditions significantly different than contemporary Venus [3,4], and geologic relations are consistent with rtt representing the oldest locally exposed unit across Venus [5], although individual tracts of rrt may have formed at differnet times [6]. We have constructed a global geologic map of rtt exposures an...
